Snoring is now a major worry in the world today; many of the people around the world are snorers. Snoring is essentially caused by the vibrations from the soft tissues or the loose throat muscles. Other factors like smoking, drinking, and obesity too are also major causes in snoring.

Causes of snoring

Snoring can be also caused by heredity. You can inherit a narrow passageway of the throat and other physical malformations which lead directly to snoring.

Sleeping posture

Sleeping on your back can drag your tongue and jaw backwards towards the back of your throat through gravity. This restricts the air flow through narrow passageway which then causes snoring sounds to be made.

Consumption of alcohol

Consumption of alcohol or any other substances which act as relaxants and produce sleepiness can cause snoring. Alcohol relaxes your muscles by contracting your airway which causes the tongue to relax and fall backwards. This causes you to breathe with a greater forcefulness through the narrow passage which results in snoring.

Overweight

Overweight people are known to be more prone to snoring as the fatty tissue in the neck region and in the back of the throat closes up the airway which leads to breathing difficulties and thence snoring.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a device which forces air into the nose through a mask which is worn over your nose or face. It is considered to be the best treatment to cure sleep apnea. This device helps by keeping your airways open while you are asleep. CPAP is not that comfortable as it usually causes dryness of your mouth.

Jaw positioning devices

The jaw positioning splint is put in the mouth before going to bed. This device supports your lower jaw in a forward position.

This splint cures snoring by pulling your tongue frontwards away from the back of your throat. This stops the tongue from sliding backwards which is the cause snoring noise. For people who are obese there are numerous different types of splint available.
